November is a shoulder month on several coasts, so plan around the region rather than the calendar. Hawaii's Ocean Safety service starts its winter season in November, when north and west shores can see very large surf. That is expert territory: the state advises inexperienced surfers to stay out of the water at north shore beaches during high surf.
How to choose a November surf destination
For an Atlantic trip, Visit Portugal describes early autumn and winter as the stronger surf period on its central west coast. Bigger swell makes exposed breaks more demanding, so pair a headline spot with a more sheltered backup near where you stay.
For a tropical trip, check the season of the specific coast. Sri Lanka Tourism puts the west side's best conditions from December to March, so November is still early there. Costa Rica stays in its green season until mid-December: rain matters for travel and planning, but it does not by itself tell you whether the surf will be good.
