Surfing Nicaragua

26 surf spots|28°C water|13 Beach, 8 Reef, 5 Point

Nicaragua is Central America's emerging surf destination, offering what Costa Rica had 20 years ago — consistent waves, empty lineups, affordable prices, and a raw, authentic travel experience. The Pacific coast catches powerful south swells from March through October, producing consistent overhead surf at dozens of beach and reef breaks.

The main surf corridor runs from Popoyo in the south to León in the north. Popoyo and its surrounding breaks (Playa Colorado, Lance's Left, Manzanillo) are the headliners — a variety of reefs and points in close proximity. Further north, beaches around San Juan del Sur and beyond offer uncrowded alternatives.

Nicaragua remains more adventurous than its neighbors, which is exactly the appeal. The infrastructure is developing rapidly, with boutique hotels and surf camps popping up along the coast, but you can still find empty world-class waves with just a short drive.
