Diaz Beach is Mossel Bay's long sandy stretch, breaking directly in front of the old Dias hotel with lefts and rights spread across kilometers of shifting banks. Named for Bartolomeu Dias, who landed in this bay in 1488, it is one of the Southern Cape's best places to learn: sandy bottom, manageable peaks and a town that claims one of the mildest year-round climates anywhere. It needs a decent southeast swell to get going inside the protected bay, and the rips deserve respect when it does.
