Cheapest Surf Destinations in the World
World-class waves don't need a world-class budget. The cheapest surf destinations on Earth.
30 spots featured
Surfing is supposed to be free. The waves are free, the ocean is free — but somewhere along the way, surf travel turned into a luxury industry. Resort packages in the Maldives run $5,000 a week. Boat trips through the Mentawais cost more. The original spirit of the surf trip — backpacks, cheap rooms, finding waves — got priced out.
These destinations bring it back. They deliver world-class waves on a backpacker budget: rooms under $30 a night, meals under $5, surf taxis instead of resort transfers. Indonesia outside Bali, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Morocco — these are countries where $1,500 covers a real two-week surf trip including flights for many travelers.
The tradeoffs are honest: less polish, more logistics, and you'll work harder to find the best waves. But if you've been sitting out trips because of cost, these spots prove that the dream is still affordable.
