Peaks

Ahipara, New Zealand
🪨Rocks

One of New Zealand's longest single-section lefts: from a sucky take-off into the barrel, full-speed walls and hollow pockets can link for about a kilometre back to the beach. The paddle-out between rocky outcrops is tricky, and less experienced surfers join further down the line. It is listed as a surf break of national significance in Schedule 1 of the New Zealand Coastal Policy Statement. It works best on a SW swell with S winds around low tide. Watch for: tricky paddle-out between rocks, sucky take-off; experts.

Frequently Asked Questions

What tide is best at Peaks?

What wind direction is offshore at Peaks?

The Peaks profile uses wind from S (180°) as its preferred direction, with an offshore range of 130° to 230°. Wind speed matters too: light winds outside that range can still produce surfable conditions, while strong offshore winds can make takeoffs difficult.

What swell size and direction work best at Peaks?

The Peaks scoring profile favors swell from SW (190° to 290°), a swell-height range of 1.2m to 4.6m, and a reference period of 14s. These are model inputs, not guaranteed breaking-wave heights or a promise that the surf will suit every ability.

When is the best time of year to surf Peaks?

The main season at Peaks is Mar-Nov.

How do I get to Peaks?

The spot profile lists KAT as a nearby airport. The estimated road transfer is 25 minutes.
