Surfing Spain
Spain offers surf across three distinct coastlines, each with its own character. The Basque Country in the north catches powerful North Atlantic swell with world-class river mouth bars and reef breaks. Galicia in the northwest is rawer and emptier — powerful waves in a Celtic-influenced landscape. And the Canary Islands deliver year-round waves in warm water off the coast of Africa.
The Basque Country's Mundaka — a long, hollow left-hand river mouth break — is Spain's most famous wave and one of the best in Europe. But the coast from San Sebastián to Santander is littered with quality breaks. The Canary Islands (Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, Tenerife) offer a completely different proposition — volcanic reef breaks in warm water, accessible by short flights from mainland Europe.
Spain's combination of surf quality, food culture, nightlife, and affordable costs makes it one of Europe's most appealing surf destinations.
