It loads straight into a ride: your first session drops you onto a perfect day at Skeleton Bay, the Namibian left most surfers will only ever see from a drone clip. From there it is barrels, airs, combos and score chasing, with challenge links you can send a mate so they can try to beat your score and fail.

The design brief was simple: the feeling of early-2000s surf games, the era of TransWorld Surf and Kelly Slater's Pro Surfer, without copying either. It plays on a phone held in portrait with two thumbs, or on a laptop with just the keyboard. Session length comes in wave-sized chunks, which is the correct unit for a game you open while pretending to work.

The Microsoft Edge surf game at edge://surf

The most polished browser surf game on Earth is hiding inside a browser most surfers only open by accident. Type edge://surf into Microsoft Edge's address bar and you get Surf, the game Microsoft shipped in May 2020 as Edge's offline page, the way Chrome has its dinosaur. It is an open nod to SkiFree, the 1991 Windows classic whose gameplay it is constantly compared to, and Microsoft leaned into the comparison with a 2021 ski-themed update featuring the SkiFree yeti. Here, the monster hunting you down the line is a kraken.

You steer a surfer downwave through obstacles, collecting coins and speed boosts, across four modes: endless, time trial, zig zag, and a collector mode added in a 2025 update alongside a character creator. It works with keyboard, mouse, touch or a controller, runs fully offline, and goes anywhere Edge goes: Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS. Microsoft also hosts a cut-down lite edition on its website that plays in any modern browser, so Chrome and Safari holdouts are not entirely excluded.

As surfing, it is nonsense: no wave breaks, nobody paddles, the ocean is a downhill slope. As a free game, it is generous, quietly excellent and better than it has any right to be. Best on a laptop; on a phone it needs the Edge app.

R.I.P. Curl on itch.io

The best pure-browser wave riding on itch.io is a PICO-8 game by iLKke, whose blurb calls it "a scientifically accurate surfing simulator". It is not. It is an 8-bit arcade gauntlet with four playable characters in which you surf while dodging sharks and bombs that fall from the sky.

R.I.P. Curl is free, loads in seconds as HTML5, and runs on arrow keys plus a button or two, which makes it a desktop game in practice. Find it at ilkke.itch.io/rip-curl. Expect to die a lot. Expect to press restart anyway.

Where all the other browser surf games went

Now the honest part, because this is where the average surf games roundup starts lying to you.

• YouRiding is no longer a browser game. Since 2007 the series has been the reference for realistic surf simulation, and its earlier generations lived in the browser. The current version is genuinely good, with real-world spots and a wave editor holding thousands of community-built waves, but it is a download: free on iOS and Android, and a paid title at around US$10 on Steam. • Flash took a generation of surf games with it.
