Nobody plans their week around a mobile surf game. That is the point of them. A surf game on your phone exists for the dead moments: the flight at the start of a strike mission, the bus home while it is two foot and onshore, the lull between sets when the tide is wrong. Consoles get all the nostalgia, but the phone already in your pocket is where a surf game actually gets played. So we went through the App Store and Google Play, verified every surf game for iPhone and Android that is real and currently downloadable, and noted what each one costs and whether it respects your time or treats you like a coin dispenser.

That verification step matters more than you would think. Half the surf game roundups online still recommend Infinite Surf, a mellow endless surfer from 2012 that has quietly vanished from both stores. Every listing below was checked the week this was published.

The short version

True Surf: the official WSL surf game

If you install one mobile surf game, make it this one. True Surf comes from True Axis, the Australian studio behind True Skate, and it is the official game of the World Surf League. The pedigree shows. This is a physics simulation first: the wave behaves like moving water, the board responds like a board, and your first sessions will be humbling in exactly the way True Skate was humbling. The game does not care that you can actually surf.

The feature that sells it is real-time conditions powered by Surfline. Swell height and direction, wind, tide and water temperature are pulled from live forecast data, so when Pipeline is pumping in the real world it is pumping in the game. There are 34 world-class spots to unlock, including Pipeline, Cloudbreak, Bells Beach, Jeffreys Bay, Nazare and Jaws.

Money talk: it is free to download on both iPhone and Android. Monetization runs on an in-game currency called clams, sold in packs from $0.99 up to a frankly unhinged $99.99, plus two optional $2.99-a-month subscriptions. What reviewers grumble about is not ads but grind: progression is slow and partly time-gated if you spend nothing. For a game you dip into during ten-minute gaps, slow progression is close to a feature.

YouRiding: the pay-once surf sim

YouRiding has been making surf games since 2007 and claims more than three million riders, and the current mobile app from BoardScore, Inc. is the closest a phone gets to a competition simulator. The wave list is genuinely good: Kirra, Teahupoo, Supertubos, North Point, Cloud 9, and Skeleton Bay, a wave that appears twice in this post and that most of us will only ever ride in software.

Two features separate it from everything else here. First, a wave editor: set the direction, size, speed and sections, build your local or your fantasy slab, then ride hundreds of community-built waves when you run out of ideas. Second, real competition: online bracket tournaments with sixteen surfers and man-on-man heats. It is also the only game on this list where you can ride a bodyboard with an actual trick list (El Rollo, ARS, backflips) rather than a novelty skin.

It costs $5.99 on the US App Store, with versions on Google Play and Steam as well. A mobile game charging real money up front in 2026 is almost quaint. We mean that as a compliment.

Sushi Surf: one for the grommets

Honesty first: Sushi Surf is not really a surfing game. It is a bright, charming endless runner that happens to take place on water, in which two kids catch fish to bring home for sushi night. The controls are one-touch, the mechanics owe more to Subway Surfers than to surfing, and nobody involved has ever heard of a bottom turn.

It is free, and it is monetized like every free endless runner: gem packs from $0.99 to $49.99 and ads you watch to revive a dead run. Judged as a surf game it barely qualifies. Judged as something to hand a grommet in the back seat on a four-hour drive to the coast, it does its job.

Barton Lynch Pro Surfing: not on your phone, mostly

The question every mobile surf gamer eventually googles: is Barton Lynch Pro Surfing on iPhone or Android? Short answer, no. BLPS is a PC and console title, released in late 2023, and there is no native mobile version. The main workaround is Xbox Cloud Gaming: buy the game, hold an Xbox Game Pass subscription, pair a controller, and you can stream it to your phone (GeForce NOW can also stream the Steam version). Streaming a timing-sensitive surf sim over mobile data is its own kind of wipeout, but it technically counts. Strike Mission: The Game (no install required)

Full disclosure: we made this one, so calibrate accordingly. Strike Mission: The Game is a free arcade surf game that runs in your phone browser, held in portrait, played with two thumbs. Nothing to install, no account, no ads, no purchases. It loads straight into a ride on a perfect day at Skeleton Bay, because if you are going to hand someone one wave, hand them that one.

The style is 2.5D and side-on: barrels, airs, combos and score chasing. It is openly built on what people loved about the early-2000s surf games, TransWorld Surf and Kelly Slater's Pro Surfer, without copying them. When you set a score you can send a mate a challenge link so they can try to beat it. On a laptop it plays with just the keyboard, but it was designed for exactly the bus-stop moments this post is about.
