Backdoor Stent

Pungarehu, New Zealand
🪨Rocks🪸Sharp reef

Nationally significant boulder-reef platform just north of Stent Road: a short right and a longer left peeling NE, favoured in smaller waves and sheltered in SE winds. It is listed as a surf break of national significance in Schedule 1 of the New Zealand Coastal Policy Statement. It works best on a WSW swell with SE winds. Watch for: boulders, stream run-off.

Frequently Asked Questions

What tide is best at Backdoor Stent?

The Backdoor Stent profile does not specify a preferred tide stage. That does not mean tide has no effect: check local conditions alongside swell and wind.

What wind direction is offshore at Backdoor Stent?

The Backdoor Stent profile uses wind from SE (135°) as its preferred direction, with an offshore range of 90° to 180°. Wind speed matters too: light winds outside that range can still produce surfable conditions, while strong offshore winds can make takeoffs difficult.

What swell size and direction work best at Backdoor Stent?

The Backdoor Stent scoring profile favors swell from WSW (215° to 330°), a swell-height range of 0.7m to 2.7m, and a reference period of 14s. These are model inputs, not guaranteed breaking-wave heights or a promise that the surf will suit every ability.

When is the best time of year to surf Backdoor Stent?

The main season at Backdoor Stent is Mar-Nov.
