Chomoni Beach
Chomoni Beach sits on Grande Comore in the shadow of Mount Karthala, one of the world's most active volcanoes—a setting that would be extraordinary even without waves. During the southeast trade season, Indian Ocean swells wrap around the volcanic island to create surfable conditions on black sand beaches. This is coelacanth territory—the prehistoric fish thought extinct until discovered here. The infrastructure is minimal and the surfing community essentially nonexistent, but for adventurous travelers, Comoros offers genuine discovery in one of the Indian Ocean's least-visited corners.
