Surfing French Guiana
French Guiana is one of the most overlooked corners of the surfing world. Tucked between Suriname and Brazil on the northeast shoulder of South America, it sits well outside the standard South Atlantic and Caribbean swell windows — which is exactly why almost no one surfs here.
The coast around Cayenne and Remire-Montjoly does pick up surf, mostly when North Atlantic systems and tropical disturbances send swell wrapping down past the Caribbean arc. Anse de Remire is the main known break — a sand-bottom beach break that turns on between November and April when wind and swell line up. Conditions are inconsistent, the lineup is essentially empty, and infrastructure is limited compared to neighboring Brazil or the French Caribbean islands.
Water temperatures stay around 27°C year-round and there are no crowds. For surfers passing through the Guianas or based in Cayenne, it's worth a check whenever the forecast aligns. For most travelers, French Guiana is a curiosity rather than a primary destination — but the live forecast below shows when it's actually worth paddling out.
