Surfing Little Corn Island: The Complete Guide

Little Corn Island is a reef break located in Corn Islands, Nicaragua, offering both lefts and rights along Central America's Pacific-facing coastline. Little Corn Island is the ultimate off-grid surf adventure—a car-free Caribbean island where the rugged east coast transforms into dramatic surf when east-northeast swells (30°-130°) arrive from tropical storms or sustained trade winds. Rated as intermediate difficulty with uncrowded conditions, this reef break is a worthy destination for surfers looking beyond the usual suspects.

Best Conditions

Swell Direction: The ideal swell direction is E (80°), with workable conditions from NNE to SE (30°–130°). Swells outside this window will either miss the break or produce disorganized waves.

Swell Size: Little Corn Island needs a minimum of 0.6m / 2ft to start working and handles swells up to 2m / 7ft before conditions deteriorate.

Swell Period: Look for a swell period of at least 8 seconds, with 11 seconds being the sweet spot. Longer periods deliver more organized, powerful waves with better shape.

Secondary Swell: NNE to NE swells from Caribbean winter storms.

Wind: True offshore here blows from the W (270°). The full offshore range spans SW to NW (220°–320°). Glassy conditions under 4km/h from any direction also produce excellent surf. Plan for early morning dawn patrol sessions.

Tide: This spot works best at mid to high tide. Optimal tide range is 0.4m–1.4m. Avoid surfing when the tide drops below 0.3m — it becomes dangerously shallow.

When to Go

Primary Season: The prime window at Little Corn Island runs June, July, August, September, October (Jun–Oct). This is when swell consistency and direction align most reliably with the break.

Secondary Season: A secondary window opens November, December, January (Nov–Jan). While not as consistent, patient surfers can still score quality sessions during this period.

Season Notes: Peak rainy season (July-Aug) best. Needs sustained E-NE Caribbean swell. Very inconsistent.

Water Temperature: Expect water temperatures around 28°C / 82°F. Boardshorts or a thin rashguard are all you need.

The nearest airport is RNI, just a quick 0-minute drive from the break. A boat is required to reach the lineup, costing approximately $15 USD.
