Surfing Big Corn Island: The Complete Guide

Big Corn Island is a reef break located in Corn Islands, Nicaragua, offering both lefts and rights along Central America's Pacific-facing coastline. Big Corn Island is Nicaragua's Caribbean surf frontier—a remote island 70km offshore where coral reef breaks come alive during the rainy season and tropical storm activity. Rated as intermediate difficulty with uncrowded conditions, this reef break is a worthy destination for surfers looking beyond the usual suspects.

Best Conditions

Swell Direction: The ideal swell direction is E (90°), with workable conditions from NE to SE (45°–135°). Swells outside this window will either miss the break or produce disorganized waves.

Swell Size: Big Corn Island needs a minimum of 0.8m / 3ft to start working and handles swells up to 2.5m / 8ft before conditions deteriorate.

Swell Period: Look for a swell period of at least 8 seconds, with 12 seconds being the sweet spot. Longer periods deliver more organized, powerful waves with better shape.

Secondary Swell: NE swells from winter cold fronts can produce waves.

Wind: True offshore here blows from the W (270°). The full offshore range spans SW to NW (225°–315°). Glassy conditions under 4km/h from any direction also produce excellent surf. Plan for early morning dawn patrol sessions.

Tide: This spot works best at mid to high tide. Optimal tide range is 0.3m–1.5m. Avoid surfing when the tide drops below 0.2m — it becomes dangerously shallow.

When to Go

Primary Season: The prime window at Big Corn Island runs May, June, July, August, September, October (May–Oct). This is when swell consistency and direction align most reliably with the break.

Secondary Season: A secondary window opens November, December, January, February (Nov–Feb). While not as consistent, patient surfers can still score quality sessions during this period.

Season Notes: Rainy season (May-Oct) brings best waves. NE winter swells secondary. Needs E-ENE Caribbean swell or tropical storm activity.

Water Temperature: Expect water temperatures around 28°C / 82°F. Boardshorts or a thin rashguard are all you need.
