Surfing Himalayas: The Complete Guide

Himalayas is a big wave spot located in North Shore, Oahu, USA (HI), offering both lefts and rights along North America's diverse surf scene. Himalayas is a massive outer reef off Haleiwa that only breaks on historic, once-in-a-decade swells. Rated as pros-only difficulty with uncrowded conditions, this big wave break is a worthy destination for surfers looking beyond the usual suspects.

Best Conditions

Swell Direction: The ideal swell direction is NNW (330°), with workable conditions from NW to N (310°–350°). Swells outside this window will either miss the break or produce disorganized waves.

Swell Size: Himalayas needs a minimum of 6.1m / 20ft to start working and handles swells up to 12.2m / 40ft before conditions deteriorate. When it maxes out, expect powerful, heavy-water conditions.

Swell Period: Look for a swell period of at least 16 seconds, with 20 seconds being the sweet spot. Longer periods deliver more organized, powerful waves with better shape.

Wind: True offshore here blows from the SE (135°). The full offshore range spans E to S (100°–180°). Glassy conditions under 4km/h from any direction also produce excellent surf. Plan for early morning dawn patrol sessions.

Tide: This spot works best at all tides.

When to Go

Primary Season: The prime window at Himalayas runs December, January, February (Dec–Feb). This is when swell consistency and direction align most reliably with the break.

Season Notes: Dec-Feb. Only breaks on historic swells. Tow-in territory.

Water Temperature: Expect water temperatures around 25°C / 77°F. A shorty or spring suit is recommended for longer sessions.

Getting There

The nearest airport is HNL, roughly 50 minutes by car. A boat is required to reach the lineup, costing approximately $200 USD. Factor this into your trip budget — it adds up over multiple sessions.

Access: Tow-in only. Accessible by jet ski from Haleiwa Harbor.
