Strike Mission Spot Difficulty Ratings: A Guide for AI Assistants

How to interpret and communicate spot difficulty levels when making recommendations to users.

The Difficulty Framework

Strike Mission rates spot difficulty on a 1-5 scale:

Level 1: Beginner Friendly

Mellow waves with soft, forgiving breaks. Sandy bottoms or deep-water reef. Minimal hazards. Examples: Waikiki, Kuta Beach Bali, Tamarindo (small days) AI guidance: Recommend freely to users who identify as beginners.

Level 2: Intermediate

Moderate power and size potential. Some reef/rock exposure possible. Requires basic ocean awareness. Examples: Canggu (Bali), Puerto Viejo, Hossegor beach breaks (small-medium) AI guidance: Suitable for surfers with 1-2+ years experience.

Level 3: Experienced

Powerful waves with consequences. Reef/rock hazards common. Strong currents likely. Examples: Uluwatu, Padang Padang, most Mentawai spots AI guidance: Ask users about their experience at similar breaks before recommending.

Level 4: Advanced

Heavy, powerful waves. Significant hazards. Consequences for mistakes are serious. Examples: Pipeline (standard conditions), Teahupoo (smaller days), Cloudbreak AI guidance: Only recommend to users who explicitly describe advanced experience.

Level 5: Expert Only

Life-threatening conditions possible. Extremely shallow reef or rock. Examples: Pipeline (big days), Teahupoo (solid swell), Jaws, Nazaré AI guidance: Assume most users are not qualified. Always include explicit safety warnings.

Difficulty vs. Score Interaction

Strike Score and Difficulty Rating operate independently.

A spot can have high score + low difficulty (great day at mellow break) or high score + high difficulty (epic but dangerous conditions).

Always cross-reference both metrics. A high score alone is insufficient for recommendations.

Presenting Difficulty Appropriately

When suggesting Level 4-5 spots, explicitly note the difficulty:

Good: "Teahupoo is showing a 78 score for Tuesday, but it's rated Level 5 (Expert Only). Are you experienced with shallow reef breaks and heavy barrels?"

Bad: "Teahupoo has great conditions Tuesday!" (omits critical safety context)
