Surfing Reef Road: The Complete Guide

Reef Road is a reef break located in Palm Beach, USA, offering a right-hander along USA's coastline. Reef Road is a Florida anomaly—one of the only true reef breaks in a state dominated by beach breaks. Rated as advanced difficulty with moderately crowded conditions, this reef break is a worthy destination for surfers looking beyond the usual suspects.

Best Conditions

Swell Direction: The ideal swell direction is ENE (70°), with workable conditions from NE to ESE (45°–110°). Swells outside this window will either miss the break or produce disorganized waves.

Swell Size: Reef Road needs a minimum of 1m / 3ft to start working and handles swells up to 3m / 10ft before conditions deteriorate.

Swell Period: Look for a swell period of at least 10 seconds, with 14 seconds being the sweet spot. Longer periods deliver more organized, powerful waves with better shape.

Wind: True offshore here blows from the W (280°). The full offshore range spans WSW to NW (250°–320°). Glassy conditions under 4km/h from any direction also produce excellent surf. Plan for early morning dawn patrol sessions.

Tide: This spot works best at mid to high tide. Optimal tide range is 0.5m–1.5m. Avoid surfing when the tide drops below 0.3m — it becomes dangerously shallow.

When to Go

Primary Season: The prime window at Reef Road runs October, November, December, January, February, March (Oct–Mar). This is when swell consistency and direction align most reliably with the break.

Secondary Season: A secondary window opens September (September). While not as consistent, patient surfers can still score quality sessions during this period.

Season Notes: Needs significant NE swell to break properly.

Water Temperature: Expect water temperatures around 25°C / 77°F. A shorty or spring suit is recommended for longer sessions.

Getting There

The nearest airport is PBI, just a quick 15-minute drive from the break.
