Hamaatsuma Beach

Tomakomai, Japan
🌀Strong rips

Hamaatsuma is Hokkaido's most accessible surf spot, a beginner-friendly beachbreak south of New Chitose Airport with consistent 2-foot waves and full facilities. The water is cold year-round—even summer requires at least a 3/2 wetsuit—but the tradeoff is uncrowded waves and an authentic Japanese surf experience far from the Tokyo masses. August through November offers the best combination of warmer water and typhoon swells.
