Shark Island is Sydney's most punishing wave—a right-hand slab that breaks over an almost-dry rock shelf, producing thick, heavy barrels of cartoonish proportions. The wave is mostly dominated by bodyboarders due to the shallow, square-shaped takeoff that makes standing up nearly suicidal. It only works for two hours either side of high tide, and even then, broken bones and backs are common. This is Sydney's gladiatorial arena: brutal, unforgiving, and spectacular to watch.
