Outside Log Cabins is the North Shore's extreme outer reef—a deepwater break that only activates during the most massive swells when the nearshore reefs are completely maxed out. In 1998, an 85-foot wave was ridden here, one of the largest ever surfed at the time. The wave breaks only a few times per decade and requires tow-in access. This is Hawaii's last resort when everything else is too big.
